Commerce Responds to Governor's Request for Fishing Failure Declaration
Governor will continue to work with Congress to secure relief funding for fishing communities
(Salem) – In response to a request by Governor Ted Kulongoski, the U.S. Department of Commerce today declared a commercial fishing failure and a fishery resource disaster for ocean salmon fishing off the coasts of Oregon, Washington and California . In a letter received today, Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez issued the declarations, which is the next step in a process to receive congressional aid for the fishing industry and communities affected by the closure of the West Coast commercial and recreational salmon fishing season.
“This declaration moves us one step closer to securing the help the people in our fishing communities desperately need,” said Governor Kulongsoki. “I am pleased with Secretary Gutierrez’s quick response to our call for federal assistance, and I will continue to work with the Oregon congressional delegation to ensure adequate financial relief is available for our communities.”
The declarations issued today provide Congress significant leverage to appropriate disaster relief funds for Oregon, Washington and California.
